Description
The Yawanawá implemented a community-wide ban on alcohol and television inside their villages during their 1980s independence movement, following the destruction left behind by the rubber trade. They have since becoming more lenient on television but still have a ban on alcohol. By blending ancestral traditions with modern fashion and digital technology, the Yawanawá pioneered a global model for indigenous sovereignty. Their unique mastery of international branding and cultural diplomacy has made them Brazil’s most recognized tribe on the world stage.
